UN 3480: Standalone lithium-ion battery cells. Watt-hour limits and state of charge restrictions apply. Packing Instruction P903.
UN 3481: Lithium-ion batteries packed with or contained in equipment such as laptops, power tools, and medical devices.
UN 3090: Standalone lithium metal or lithium alloy battery cells. Lithium content limits apply. Higher risk classification than lithium-ion.
UN 3091: Lithium metal batteries packed with or contained in equipment including torches, cameras, and military equipment.
Large-format lithium-ion battery packs from electric vehicles (EVs), typically UN 3480 or UN 3481. Special provisions apply for large format and high-energy EV battery packs.
LiPo batteries used in drones, RC vehicles, and consumer electronics, classified under the same UN numbers as lithium-ion batteries. Particular sensitivity to damage and heat.
Damaged, defective, recalled, or end-of-life batteries require enhanced packaging under special provision 376. Contact us before attempting to move damaged lithium batteries.
We can collect and transport most other battery types, including lead-acid, NiCAD, NiMH and more.
— LITHIUM BATTERY TRANSPORT UK
The safe transport of lithium batteries is one of the most regulated and rapidly growing areas of dangerous goods by road. As electric vehicles (EVs), portable electronics, and battery-powered equipment proliferate across industry and commerce, the demand for compliant, specialist lithium battery transportation has never been greater.
We provide a reliable, fully documented battery transport service for businesses that need to move batteries safely and in accordance with all international regulations.
Failure to comply with the transport of batteries regulations is not only a criminal offence, but creates serious liability in the event of a incident during transit. Our lithium battery transport service ensures every battery consignment moves in full compliance.
Our ADR battery transport service supports businesses across a wide range of sectors. Get in touch to book a collection for your battery goods or waste today.
Lithium batteries, including lithium-ion batteries, lithium metal batteries, and lithium polymer cells, are classified as Class 9 dangerous goods under the ADR regulations: The European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road. This classification exists because lithium batteries present a genuine fire and explosion risk during transport if they are damaged, incorrectly packaged, or exposed to heat or short-circuit conditions.
The international regulations governing the transport of lithium batteries have become significantly stricter in recent years following a series of high-profile fires involving batteries shipped in non-compliant conditions. The requirements for transporting lithium ion batteries by road in the UK now cover battery cell state of charge (SOC), packaging specification, UN number, labelling, documentation, and driver training.
— EV BATTERY TRANSPORT
Whether batteries are being moved for repair, replacement, storage, recycling, or redistribution, the transport of EV batteries presents some of the most complex battery logistics challenges.
EV battery packs are large-format, high-energy lithium-ion systems, typically classified under UN 3480 or UN 3481 depending on their configuration.
Contact us to discuss your EV battery transportation requirements. We work with automotive businesses, fleet operators, EV repairers, and battery recyclers to provide compliant, practical battery logistics solutions.
— FAQs
Yes. Lithium-ion batteries, lithium metal batteries, and lithium polymer batteries are all classified as Class 9 dangerous goods under the ADR regulations and the United Nations Model Regulations for the transport of dangerous goods. This classification exists because lithium batteries present a fire and explosion risk during transport if they are damaged, incorrectly packaged, overcharged, or exposed to excessive heat. The transport of lithium batteries by road in the UK requires ADR compliance including correct UN numbers, packaging, labelling, documentation, and a certified driver.
Lithium batteries must be packaged in UN-approved outer packaging that meets the specification for the relevant packing instruction (P903 for lithium-ion and lithium metal, P908 for damaged batteries). Each battery or battery pack must be individually protected against short-circuit (e.g. with insulating tape over terminals or in individual packaging). The outer packaging must be marked with the UN number, the proper shipping name, and the lithium battery handling mark. Batteries must not be packed with materials that could cause damage or short-circuit in transit.
Batteries transported for disposal, recycling, or treatment are subject to both the ADR dangerous goods requirements and the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009. Batteries classified as waste must be accompanied by the appropriate waste documentation in addition to the ADR transport document. Our background in hazardous waste management means we handle waste battery transport with full compliance across both regulatory frameworks.
For lithium-ion batteries transported under Section II of the packing instructions, the state of charge must not exceed 30% of rated capacity. We advise clients on SOC requirements before collection and, where required, can coordinate partial discharge prior to transport. This is a frequently overlooked requirement that creates significant compliance risk when ignored.
Demand for compliant battery transportation spans a wide range of UK industries. This includes EV manufacturers, battery manufacturers, e-bike operators, industrial and UPS operators, aerospace businesses and military defence.
