Yes. Lithium-ion batteries, lithium metal batteries, and lithium polymer batteries are all classified as Class 9 dangerous goods under the ADR regulations and the United Nations Model Regulations for the transport of dangerous goods. This classification exists because lithium batteries present a fire and explosion risk during transport if they are damaged, incorrectly packaged, overcharged, or exposed to excessive heat. The transport of lithium batteries by road in the UK requires ADR compliance including correct UN numbers, packaging, labelling, documentation, and a certified driver.

Lithium batteries must be packaged in UN-approved outer packaging that meets the specification for the relevant packing instruction (P903 for lithium-ion and lithium metal, P908 for damaged batteries). Each battery or battery pack must be individually protected against short-circuit (e.g. with insulating tape over terminals or in individual packaging). The outer packaging must be marked with the UN number, the proper shipping name, and the lithium battery handling mark. Batteries must not be packed with materials that could cause damage or short-circuit in transit.

Batteries transported for disposal, recycling, or treatment are subject to both the ADR dangerous goods requirements and the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009. Batteries classified as waste must be accompanied by the appropriate waste documentation in addition to the ADR transport document.
